Atelier was designed by the John Alden Co. of Boston and built by Pearson Yachts in Rhode Island in 1965. It is ketch rigged and is 44 ft.long. It spent several years in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and Texas. I bought it in Annapolis in 2004. Atelier replaces several previous painting vessels; the last, a powerboat also named Atelier was a down east cruiser built in Maine in 1970. I like boats with pretty lines, and there are very few good-looking newer boats. I can't understand why designers are trying to emulate the kitchen appliance. They can't put a nice sheer line and graceful stern on a boat any more.

Atelier is an ideal boat for its primary purpose, which is to get to locations to paint. It's big enough to stand up to the famous Buzzards Bay wind, which comes in almost every afternoon, but not too big for Patty and me to handle when the boys aren't aboard. It has a huge cockpit in which I can set up my easel. If the weather is bad, I can paint out of the deckhouse windows. This summer we will be sailing around eastern Long Island Sound. Eventually we plan to sail to the Caribbean for the winter; maybe Cuba will be open by then. It looks like a spectacular place to paint.
